Hi I’m John Watson with Accrue Marketing.

I launched my first business in 1998, and I knew I lacked experience. I was almost 30, married and expecting my first child. I knew I was taking a risk, starting a business. I needed to make it work, or else.

So, I went looking for help. I wanted advice from someone who had already made the mistakes; I was about to make. I wanted to create a business development roadmap. What I got was laughed at, brushed off, or one of many sales pitches.

I got busy, making mistakes and learning from them. I read everything I could get my hands on. I took sales, communication and leadership training. I hired business coaches and enrolled mentors. Eventually, I created the business development roadmap I was looking for.

It’s now more than twenty years since I started out. We’ve become the provider I wanted to find, all those years ago.

We’re offering a mix of start-up advice and business development support. We’re here to help people, start and grow businesses using the roadmap we created.

When we say Random Acts of Marketing, what do we mean?

It means we see people spending money on random marketing activities with no connection to goals or how goals are achieved.

We see people getting caught up in looking good and letting their ego drive their marketing.
We see websites getting built because “we need a website”.
We see businesses jumping on social media because everyone else is.

If you have an annual marketing budget, it’s probably not an investment strategy. It’s likely a list of things to do and buy, without a clear sense of purpose.

When we say Make The Shift to Earnings Growth, what do we mean? It means you approach marketing with explicit goals and constraints. It means you start by understanding your sales economics. Then you chose activities to help you achieve goals.

It means you work through each step in Your Client’s Path through your business. You focus on making it easy to buy from you. This shift alone can produce huge improvements. It’s an excellent place to start.

Making the shift also means shifting your purpose. It means approaching marketing as if you are building a relationship assembly line. You engage clients with the intent of maximising their lifetime value. Your assembly line guides clients from first exposure, to first sale. Then you onboard them into your community. Then you turn them into repeat, and regular customers and on to fanatics.

Shifting to earnings growth is not just about your customer’s journey. It’s about Your Own Journey as well. A key question is, who do you need to become, to foster client relationships?

But what does this mean for search marketing and advertising?

It means you approach your advertising as if it’s an investment portfolio. Each promotional channel is like an asset class with a different purpose in your portfolio. Each channel has a different time horizon with a different risk and reward profile. Just like investing, you track performance and rebalance your asset classes periodically to maximise your return and control your risk.

If you’re thinking of building a website, there’s a good chance you’re planning an online brochure about your business. Who you are, what you do etc.

Unfortunately, we see the aftermath of brochure building all the time. People spend money on brochure websites that look nice and tell their story. But when they start sending visitors to the website, nothing happens. A brochure is rarely what you need, but it’s what you get when you don’t know what to ask for. The challenge is learning to ask for help achieving goals, not help with independent tasks.

Think of a website like a cog in your marketing machine. Any cog by itself is useless. To create any value, it needs to serve a purpose within your machine.

So what’s the purpose of your website?
Exactly what outcomes is your website supposed to produce?
Few people can answer this question clearly.

Many websites are built without clear goals or performance constraints. It’s like the difference between art and industrial design. If the goal is to be beautiful, you want art. If the goal is to produce results, you need to design a machine. Machines can be beautiful too, but if it does not work, it’s useless.
